Catherine Zeta-Jones Embraces Morticia Role in “Wednesday” Season 2
Catherine Zeta-Jones is receiving widespread acclaim for her portrayal of Morticia Addams in the second season of the popular series “Wednesday,” now streaming on Netflix. The Oscar-winning actress, known for her roles in “Chicago” and “The Mask of Zorro,” is enjoying the balance of her career and family life, especially as her daughter, Carys Douglas, recently graduated from Brown University.
The new season, which premiered its first set of episodes on August 31, 2023, reveals deeper layers of the Addams family dynamics. Zeta-Jones, 55, reflects on her experiences with her daughter, sharing a light-hearted moment: “I’ve never had a contentious relationship with my daughter, but I did give her side eye the other day,” she said. Carys playfully retorted, “Don’t Morticia me, Mom!” highlighting the fun and quirky bond they share.
As Morticia, Zeta-Jones embodies the character’s blend of charm and mystery, navigating the challenges of parenting a teenager like Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega. The actress teases that this season features “very dark family secrets that might have deadly consequences,” a theme that resonates throughout the storyline. Director Tim Burton has infused the series with a heavier horror element, as Wednesday grapples with a supernatural mystery at her school.
New Faces and Storylines Unveiled
This season introduces a variety of new characters, including Fred Armisen as Uncle Fester, alongside notable actors such as Steve Buscemi, Joanna Lumley, and Christopher Lloyd. Additionally, Lady Gaga makes a special appearance as a teacher at Nevermore Academy, creating tension with Wednesday as the plot unfolds.
Zeta-Jones expressed her enthusiasm for the role, stating, “I love her nuances, strength, and emotions. I’m so humbly blessed to be a part of this world.” Her commitment to portraying Morticia is evident, as she and co-star Luis Guzmán, who plays Gomez Addams, actively sought to explore their characters further during the first season, leading to additional scenes in the current installment.
Zeta-Jones emphasizes the importance of Morticia’s emotional depth, explaining, “Wednesday can see her mother as a bit of a pain at times, but Morticia just wants the best for her daughter.” This dynamic portrays a relatable aspect of parent-teen relationships, underscoring the unconditional love that exists beneath the surface.
A Personal and Professional Renaissance
Reflecting on her career, Zeta-Jones credits her upbringing in Swansea, Wales, where she started acting at the age of nine. “I’m very proud of my career, but it changes over the years,” she remarked. At this stage, she appreciates the freedom to choose roles that resonate with her, describing this period as a “wonderful renaissance.”
Currently, Zeta-Jones is also filming “Kill Jackie,” an action revenge thriller set to be released on Prime Video. Balancing her professional life with family, she resides in New York with her husband, actor Michael Douglas, and their two grown children, Dylan and Carys.
As Zeta-Jones continues to embrace her role as Morticia, she highlights the importance of asking for what you want in life. “You have to ask in life, and I was so thrilled to hear yes,” she said, reflecting on her journey in the entertainment industry. With her portrayal of Morticia, Zeta-Jones not only entertains but also connects with audiences on a deeper level, celebrating the unique quirks of the Addams family.
