Norio Terada Unveils Fall Collection Inspired by Jean Arp
Designer Norio Terada has launched his latest fall collection, drawing inspiration from the innovative works of artist Jean Arp. This new line, showcased in Tokyo, features hand-shaped ceramic pieces and highlights Terada’s meticulous attention to detail, utilizing high-quality materials and creative techniques.
The collection is marked by Terada’s commitment to craftsmanship, evident in the hundreds of white ceramic pieces he meticulously shaped. These elements are designed to allow guests to experience his work through both visual and tactile engagement. Terada explains that these ceramics reflect the organic curves and accidental beauty found in Arp’s creations, which serve as a central theme for this season’s offerings.
Innovative Materials and Techniques
Among the standout items is a luxurious coat crafted from cashmere sourced from Bishu, a region in Japan’s Aichi Prefecture known for its wool excellence. This coat features a subtle sack back, demonstrating Terada’s eye for detail and quality.
In a striking move towards sustainability, Terada has repurposed leftover fibers from various textiles—wools, cashmere, cottons, linens, and alpaca—into a single yarn. This yarn is then hand-knit into a plush scarf and sweater, showcasing both creativity and environmental consciousness.
Collaborations also play a significant role in this collection. Terada partnered with textile artist Emiko Sato to create unique knit bags, blending artistry with functionality. The collection further incorporates sculptural elements, with staples transformed by metal wiring woven into plackets and hems, echoing Arp’s architectural influences.
Another innovative technique employed by Terada involves a reinterpretation of Arp’s method of collaging. By randomly creasing checked wool suiting and bonding it to another wool layer, he captures the spirit of Arp’s artistic process, adding a dynamic visual element to the garments.
