Chandra X-ray Observatory Catalog Expands to 1.3 Million Detections
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has significantly enhanced its contribution to cosmic exploration with the release of the latest update to the Chandra Source Catalog (CSC), which now includes over 1.3 million X-ray detections. This comprehensive catalog serves as a vital resource for scientists, containing data collected by Chandra up to the end of 2020, solidifying its status as one of the world’s premier X-ray telescopes.
The most recent version, known as CSC 2.1, encompasses more than 400,000 unique compact and extended sources, providing precise positional information and X-ray energy data. Such detailed insights enable researchers to integrate Chandra’s X-ray data with observations from other telescopes, including the James Webb and Hubble Space Telescopes, facilitating a multifaceted understanding of cosmic phenomena.
Insights from the Galactic Center
A striking illustration of the catalog’s depth is demonstrated in a new image of the Galactic Center, home to the supermassive black hole Sagittarius A*. This image, which spans approximately 60 light-years, showcases over 3,300 individual X-ray sources detected by Chandra. The image results from 86 observations that collectively represent over three million seconds of observation time.
The catalog’s expansive reach is further highlighted through a newly released sonification, translating astronomical data into sound. This auditory representation maps 22 years of Chandra observations, from its launch until 2021, capturing the temporal nature of X-ray sources that have been observed multiple times throughout the mission. Each note in the sonification corresponds to a detection in the sky, with a visual display that depicts the Milky Way at its core.
A Living Resource for Ongoing Research
The Chandra Source Catalog remains an essential tool for ongoing research in astronomy. As the observatory continues to operate, it provides valuable data that scientists can leverage in their studies. The catalog is accessible to researchers and the public alike at the official Chandra X-ray Center website, offering an interactive experience for those interested in exploring the universe’s mysteries.
In summary, the Chandra Source Catalog stands as a testament to NASA’s commitment to advancing our understanding of the cosmos. With its updated catalog, Chandra not only preserves the rich legacy of its observations but also paves the way for future discoveries in the ever-evolving field of astrophysics.
