Waymo Partners with DoorDash for Autonomous Deliveries in Phoenix
Waymo has announced a new partnership with DoorDash that will introduce its self-driving vehicles as a delivery option for users in Phoenix, Arizona. This collaboration aims to enhance the Waymo service area by providing an additional use for its autonomous vehicles beyond transporting passengers.
Initially, deliveries will be limited to items available through DashMart, DoorDash’s convenience and grocery service. As this pilot program progresses, Waymo plans to expand its offerings to include more local merchants and a wider range of products. Customers looking to utilize this delivery service will need to place their orders via DoorDash and select the “opt-in to autonomous delivery” option during checkout.
Once the Waymo vehicle arrives, customers must physically go outside to retrieve their orders from the car’s trunk, mirroring the current method of collection utilized by traditional DoorDash deliveries. While the convenience of DoorDash traditionally includes home delivery, this new approach may deter some users who prefer having their orders brought directly to their doorstep.
Waymo has been operating its own robotaxi service in Arizona, known as Waymo One, and has also partnered with third-party services like Uber for ride-sharing. The recent collaboration with DoorDash aligns with Waymo’s strategy to explore delivery services on a smaller scale, despite the ongoing prioritization of its robotaxi and autonomous driving technologies.
The partnership reflects a growing trend where technology companies are seeking innovative solutions to enhance delivery logistics. Waymo’s foray into this space, particularly in Phoenix, indicates its commitment to diversifying its service offerings while continuing to develop its self-driving capabilities.
As Waymo expands its operations, there are plans to launch its driverless taxis in additional markets, including international locations. The company aims to begin testing its autonomous vehicles in London in 2026, marking a significant step in its global expansion efforts.
With the integration of autonomous delivery options, both Waymo and DoorDash are positioning themselves at the forefront of the evolving delivery landscape, potentially reshaping how consumers interact with food and grocery services in urban environments.
