Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department Launches AI System to Enhance Call Handling
The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department has introduced an innovative AI-assisted call handling system named Aurelian, set to enhance the processing of non-emergency calls. This initiative, which begins the week of November 10, 2023, aims to streamline communication and free up dispatchers to focus on critical incidents.
The system features a chatbot named Ava, designed to efficiently collect information from individuals reporting non-emergency situations. By summarizing calls and alerting dispatchers via a user-friendly dashboard, Aurelian is expected to alleviate the administrative burden on telecommunicators. This could lead to faster response times for urgent emergencies while ensuring that non-critical calls are still addressed appropriately.
Transforming Emergency Response
The implementation of Aurelian comes in response to the significant volume of non-emergency calls that frequently congest emergency response channels. According to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, these calls can range from barking dogs to questions about parking regulations. Such distractions can delay dispatchers from responding to life-threatening situations, making the need for an efficient system crucial.
By serving as the first point of contact for non-emergency callers, Ava ensures that emergency calls are always directed to live dispatchers. This strategic approach aims to optimize the workload of 911 telecommunicators, allowing them to prioritize critical incidents that require immediate attention.
Beyond call handling, Aurelian includes additional functionalities such as language translation, transcription, and location validation, enhancing its utility in diverse situations. This commitment to adopting technology reflects the department’s dedication to improving community services and ensuring that all residents receive timely assistance.
Looking Ahead
As the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department rolls out this advanced system, officials have indicated that further details regarding Aurelian’s deployment and operation will be shared soon. The department aims to keep the public informed about how this initiative will impact community safety and emergency response.
With the integration of Aurelian, Waukesha County is taking a significant step towards modernizing its emergency services, demonstrating how technology can play a pivotal role in enhancing public safety and operational efficiency.
