Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department Launches AI Call Handling System
The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department has introduced an innovative AI-assisted call handling system named Aurelian, set to begin operation the week of November 10, 2023. This new technology aims to optimize the processing of non-emergency calls, allowing dispatchers to focus on more critical incidents.
Aurelian includes a chatbot named Ava, designed to efficiently collect information from individuals reporting non-emergency situations. The system is expected to summarize calls and alert dispatchers through a dashboard, thereby freeing up essential resources. This initiative seeks to enhance the efficiency of 911 telecommunicators, who often manage a broad spectrum of calls ranging from minor nuisances to urgent emergencies.
Addressing Non-Emergency Call Volume
The implementation of Aurelian addresses the significant volume of non-critical calls that can overwhelm emergency response channels. According to the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department, these calls can include anything from “barking dogs to parking questions.” Such distractions can slow down the response to life-threatening situations, making the need for a dedicated system even more pressing.
By utilizing Aurelian, the department aims to ensure that every caller receives appropriate assistance while prioritizing emergency calls. Ava acts as the first point of contact for non-emergency callers, ensuring that urgent calls are still directed immediately to a live dispatcher. This dual functionality is designed to streamline the communication process, enhancing overall public safety.
Commitment to Technological Advancement
The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Department has expressed its commitment to leveraging technology to improve community services. Aurelian’s capabilities extend beyond call handling to include features such as language translation, transcription, and location validation, as highlighted in the department’s announcement.
Officials plan to provide further details regarding the system’s deployment and operational specifics in the near future, keeping the public informed about this significant advancement in emergency communication technology. The adoption of Aurelian illustrates a proactive approach to managing the challenges of modern emergency response, ultimately aiming to enhance service efficiency and community safety.
