Sony Unveils FlexStrike: A Game-Changing Fight Stick for Gamers

Sony has officially announced more details about its highly anticipated first-party fight stick, now named the FlexStrike. This wireless controller, designed for the PlayStation 5, was first revealed during the recent State of Play event. Among its standout features are interchangeable restrictor gates, mechanical switches, and a touchpad, enhancing the gaming experience for enthusiasts.

The FlexStrike allows users to switch between round, octagonal, and square restrictor gates without the need for tools. This feature offers flexibility, enabling gamers to easily transition from titles like Street Fighter 6 to classic games such as Pac-Man. For added convenience, the base of the fight stick has a compartment that stores the restrictor gates, a USB cable, and the new PS Link USB adapter. A stylish sling carrying case is also included, making it easy to transport the controller.

In terms of design, the FlexStrike features a short-throw spherical-handled joystick, providing quick responses and comfort during gameplay. The controller includes eight oversized buttons arranged in the traditional arcade format, ensuring familiarity for seasoned players. Notably, the bottom of the base incorporates a non-slip design to enhance stability during intense gaming sessions.

The FlexStrike mirrors the input configuration of the DualSense controller, featuring a touchpad but lacking a second joystick. It offers a switch that allows users to toggle between D-pad, left stick, and right stick functionalities, although the purpose of this function remains unclear. Additionally, the controller includes a lock-out switch to prevent accidental inputs while in use.

One of the practical innovations of the FlexStrike is its dual-connection port, enabling gamers to connect a second FlexStrike for local multiplayer or competitive play. This design allows both controllers to share a single USB port on the PS5. While it is possible to use the FlexStrike alongside a DualSense controller, they operate on different wireless protocols, which may present challenges.

The FlexStrike comes equipped with a PS Link USB adapter, a dongle that allows multiple wireless connections to the PlayStation 5. This feature provides the opportunity to use additional devices, such as the Pulse Elite wireless headset, simultaneously. However, potential buyers should note that the PS Link adapter is not compatible with older Sony headsets. Customers with legacy devices will need separate dongles for optimal use, which could affect their purchasing decisions.
