Puck Pieterse of Fenix-Premier Tech secured her first victory of the 2026 UCI Cyclo-cross World Cup season in Maasmechelen, showcasing her skills in a thrilling race. The Dutch cyclist finished solo, crossing the line ten seconds ahead of teammate Ceylin del Carmen Alvarado, who made a fierce effort to close the gap. Amandine Fouquenet of Pauwels Sauzen-Altez Industriebouw rounded out the podium, claiming third place despite facing challenges during the race.

The race unfolded over six intense laps, with Pieterse establishing an early lead on the third lap. However, her advantage was briefly diminished due to mistakes, allowing both Fouquenet and a chasing duo of Alvarado and Sara Casasola from Crelan-Corendon to close in. As the race progressed, a flat tyre forced Fouquenet to the pits near the end of lap five, making it difficult for her to regain competitive ground.

“I saw [Fouquenet] had a puncture and then I knew it was not too far to the pit zone,” Pieterse explained. “Once I saw it, I directly passed her and made my attack – that’s also racing, unfortunately, but she was super strong again, especially on this track, which is quite technical, so I was impressed.”

The event marked a significant moment for Pieterse, as it ended the podium streak of overall World Cup winner-elect Lucinda Brand. Brand, who has been a formidable competitor since January 2024, finished in tenth place, a result that interrupts her impressive series of podium finishes ahead of the World Championships in Hulst scheduled for next week.

“It’s a big relief to win a World Cup again,” Pieterse stated after her victory. “Last cyclo-cross season I couldn’t win one, and it made me realize how special it is as well in ‘cross to win a World Cup. Sometimes, it looks like it’s just some roadies riding in the field, but that’s for sure not the case. This was definitely one of the hardest races.”

With a background as a former junior and under-23 cyclo-cross world champion, Pieterse is well-versed in the importance of timing her peak performance for major events. After finishing second in 2023 and third at the previous two Championships, she is optimistic about her prospects for the upcoming World Championships.

“Of course, I knew this weekend that the shape needed to be good already if you want to perform next week,” she reflected. “The last two weeks weren’t the easiest after Nationals, and I’m just happy now that everything has fallen into place.”

As the cyclo-cross season progresses, Pieterse’s victory in Maasmechelen sets the stage for an exciting showdown at the World Championships. More details on the results and upcoming events are expected to follow.
