OpenAI Partners with Broadcom to Develop Custom AI Chips

OpenAI has taken a significant step in advancing its artificial intelligence capabilities by partnering with semiconductor leader Broadcom. This collaboration aims to design and produce custom AI accelerators, with a planned capacity of 10 gigawatts. The partnership marks a key development in OpenAI’s ongoing efforts to enhance its AI infrastructure.
The agreement allows OpenAI to leverage its experience in creating advanced AI models to design these new accelerators. OpenAI stated that the custom chips will be developed in collaboration with Broadcom and will utilize the knowledge gained from its existing AI products. The deployment of these accelerators is expected to occur across OpenAI’s facilities and partner data centers, potentially including usage within Microsoft‘s infrastructure to support OpenAI models.
Strategic Collaboration and Future Plans
According to Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, “Partnering with Broadcom is a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses.” Altman emphasized that developing proprietary accelerators is essential for expanding the ecosystem of partners that are collectively enhancing AI capacity.
Broadcom is set to begin deploying the custom-designed racks of AI accelerators and networking systems in the second half of 2026, with the full 10 GW capacity expected to be operational by the end of 2029. This timeline underscores the urgency and scale of the project, as both companies aim to push the boundaries of AI technology.
The collaboration with Broadcom is part of a broader series of partnerships OpenAI has announced recently, reflecting the company’s strategic focus on strengthening its AI infrastructure.
