The Oklahoma Department of Corrections has implemented advanced drone technology at the Red Rock Correctional Center to combat contraband smuggling. This initiative, launched this week in Lawton, aims to improve security and enhance the safety of both staff and inmates within the facility.

The pilot program offers continuous aerial surveillance above the correctional center, which was formerly known as the Lawton Correctional Center. This new technology will help detect and prevent the smuggling of illicit items, including drugs, cellphones, and weapons.

Candice Moore, Chief Administrator of IT and Project Management, emphasized the urgency of addressing the contraband issue. “As we know, contraband is a huge problem,” Moore stated. “Anything we can do to keep our staff and inmates safe, we are going to utilize. This technology is going to be a game-changer.” The drone system has been programmed to recognize authorized personnel and objects within the facility.

To facilitate this initiative, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections is collaborating with Skydio and Levatas, which will provide the unmanned aerial vehicles and artificial intelligence capabilities. According to Adrienne Zarn, Vice President of Success at Levatas, the autonomous drone platform will offer constant surveillance and deliver data that enables rapid response to security threats.

Training for correctional officers is also part of the program. Officers will become certified drone pilots to oversee activities within the yard and surrounding perimeter. As Moore explained, “Currently, an officer is doing perimeter detection. Usually, an officer drives around the perimeter 24/7. This causes wear and tear on the vehicle, the mileage adds up, plus the cost of gas. This technology replaces that.”

The pilot program will undergo a 45-day trial period, after which the Department of Corrections will analyze the data collected. This evaluation will focus on the effectiveness of the drones and potential cost savings before any decision is made regarding the expansion of the program to other facilities across the state.

With this innovative approach to security, the Oklahoma Department of Corrections is taking significant steps to enhance safety measures and improve operational efficiency within its correctional facilities.
