Navy Yard Station Upgrades Elevate Accessibility Ahead of Sports Seasons

Navy Yard Station has completed significant upgrades to its escalators and the west entrance elevator, enhancing both accessibility and operational efficiency. The newly installed escalators, which feature brighter LED lighting, remote monitoring capabilities, and energy-efficient motors, are now fully operational. This initiative is part of a broader effort by Metro to modernize escalator systems across its network in anticipation of the upcoming sports seasons.

Metro initiated this replacement project on October 1, 2025, with crews working diligently to update two mezzanine escalators and three escalators at the west entrance. The improvements aim to accommodate the large influx of fans expected during busy game days at nearby venues, including Nationals Park and Audi Field.

Theresa M. Impastato, Metro’s Executive Vice President and Chief Infrastructure Officer, expressed gratitude to the team involved in the project. “Thanks to the hard work and dedication of our team, Navy Yard station is prepared to safely and efficiently move thousands of fans in time for the upcoming baseball season at Nationals Park and the new soccer season at Audi Field,” she stated. Impastato also acknowledged the patience of customers during the extended closure of the west entrance, emphasizing the commitment to enhancing the overall travel experience for commuters.

As of February 2026, Metro has successfully replaced 135 of 145 escalators as part of its multi-year infrastructure project. Recent upgrades also include escalators at other key stations such as Dupont Circle, Vienna, and L’Enfant Plaza, demonstrating a widespread commitment to improving transit facilities.

Looking ahead, Metro has announced plans to replace escalators at additional stations in 2026, including Rosslyn, Gallery Place, L’Enfant Plaza west entrance, and Foggy Bottom. These upgrades are crucial for maintaining efficient and safe transit options for the increasing number of passengers using the Metro system.
