The project centers around the 2025 Boeing ecoDemonstrator Explorer, a United Airlines 737-8, which recently underwent testing to enhance communication systems between aircraft and air traffic control. Over a two-week period in October, the aircraft conducted multiple domestic flights from Houston and even flew transoceanic routes to Edinburgh, Scotland.

Passengers often face frustrating delays when their aircraft enter holding patterns, sometimes circling for over an hour before landing. According to Shivanjli Sharma, NASA’s Air Traffic Management–eXploration project manager at the Ames Research Center in California, these delays frequently arise from unexpected changes in flight trajectory due to weather or turbulence. “If there’s a change in your trajectory – you’re arriving slightly early, you’re arriving slightly late – you can get stuck in this really long, rotational holding pattern,” Sharma explained.

The collaboration between NASA and Boeing aims to develop a real-time data communication system that improves the flow of information between the flight deck, air traffic control, and airline operations. This innovative technology is designed to provide more accurate trajectory predictions, which can help mitigate delays and enhance overall flight efficiency.

NASA’s involvement in this testing aligns with its longstanding commitment to aviation research. The agency’s work focused on creating an oceanic trajectory prediction service, which involves sharing updated trajectory information even during long flights that cross international airspace. “At what rate do you need these updates in an oceanic environment? What information do you need from the aircraft?” Sharma noted, emphasizing the importance of precise data for efficient navigation.

The ecoDemonstrator Explorer program is part of a broader effort by Boeing to accelerate aviation innovations by collaborating with public and private partners. This year’s program included contributions from the Federal Aviation Administration, as well as various aerospace companies and academic institutions. By harnessing the flight data collected during this initiative, Boeing and its partners aim to progress toward operationalizing the new data communication system.

Sharma highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “This partnership has allowed NASA to further its commitment to transformational aviation research.” The integration of NASA’s expertise in trajectory prediction with contributions from an array of innovative partners is expected to yield substantial benefits for both travelers and the aviation industry.

This initiative falls under NASA’s Airspace Operations and Safety Program, which is dedicated to enabling safe and efficient aviation transportation operations.
