Federal Grant Fuels Transit Expansion in Lorain County

Residents of Lorain County, Ohio, will soon benefit from a significant enhancement in public transportation options, thanks to a federal grant of $2.7 million. This funding, announced by Commissioner David Moore, will support the expansion of the ViaLC microtransit program, which offers a flexible alternative to conventional public transport.

The grant has been awarded through the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement program, a federal initiative designed to fund transportation projects that aim to reduce vehicle emissions and alleviate traffic congestion. According to the official press release, these enhancements are expected to improve accessibility for local residents.

Expanded Services and Enhanced Accessibility

ViaLC operates through a user-friendly mobile app, allowing riders to request trips and efficiently grouping passengers traveling in the same direction into a single vehicle. With the new funding, officials plan to extend ViaLC’s operating hours, enabling workers to reach major employment centers in Lorain and Elyria outside of standard business hours.

The expansion will also introduce weekend services, significantly benefiting employees working in areas such as downtown Lorain and the Lorain Plaza Shopping Center. The aim is to enhance accessibility for those whose schedules do not align with traditional public transport timetables.

Officials anticipate that the improved services will launch in summer 2026. This development is expected to address the growing demand for reliable transportation options in the area, particularly for individuals working non-traditional hours.
