Dell 16 Premium Laptop Review: Beauty Hindered by Design Flaws

The launch of the Dell 16 Premium has generated significant attention, yet the device’s impressive specifications are overshadowed by design shortcomings. Priced at $3,199, this laptop features a powerful Intel Arrow Lake CPU and an Nvidia GPU, along with a stunning 16.3-inch 4K OLED display. While it boasts high-quality materials and sleek aesthetics, the keyboard and trackpad experience detracts from its overall appeal.
Despite its attractive exterior, the Dell 16 Premium struggles with usability. The keyboard offers only 1.0mm of key travel, which is insufficient for a comfortable typing experience. This low key travel, typically found in thinner laptops, fails to meet the expectations for a device in this weight class, which weighs in at 4.65 pounds. Additionally, the lack of tactile feedback from the capacitive function keys makes them challenging to use without looking down at the keyboard.
Specifications and Design
The Dell 16 Premium comes in several configurations, starting at $1,999, but our review focused on the high-end model featuring the Intel Core Ultra 7 255H CPU, Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 graphics, and 32GB of RAM. The laptop’s design is characterized by a minimalist aesthetic, with a durable aluminum chassis and a gorilla glass palm rest that feels premium to the touch. The OLED screen produces vibrant colors, enhancing the visual experience.
However, the display’s maximum brightness of 400 nits falls short of what many users might expect from an OLED panel, making it less suitable for outdoor use. The quad speaker setup, on the other hand, impresses with its sound quality, providing clear audio that enhances the laptop’s multimedia capabilities.
Performance and Connectivity
In terms of performance, the Dell 16 Premium excels with its robust specifications. It achieved a PCMark score of 8,204, indicating excellent overall system performance, particularly for demanding tasks. The cooling system, featuring a vapor chamber, keeps the laptop quiet and cool even under load.
Yet, the device limits connectivity options, offering only three Thunderbolt 4 (USB Type-C) ports, a combo audio jack, and a microSDXC card reader. The absence of standard ports like USB Type-A and HDMI may frustrate users who require additional connectivity for work-related tasks. Wireless capabilities include support for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4, ensuring compatibility with the latest standards.
The Dell 16 Premium also features a 1080p webcam that performs well in various lighting conditions, along with a responsive fingerprint reader integrated into the power button for secure sign-ins.
Overall, while the Dell 16 Premium showcases impressive craftsmanship and high-end components, the design compromises, particularly regarding the keyboard and trackpad, detract from its usability. At a price point of $3,199, potential buyers may find better options that deliver both performance and a satisfactory user experience.
In conclusion, the Dell 16 Premium exemplifies the delicate balance between aesthetics and function, leaving users to weigh the beauty of the design against the practicality of daily use.
