The Beachwood Police Department in Ohio has added a significant new asset to its traffic enforcement fleet: a fully electric Ford Mustang Mach-E. This vehicle is believed to be the first electric police cruiser deployed in Northeast Ohio, marking a notable step towards sustainability in law enforcement. Residents will have the opportunity to see the Mach-E during the National Night Out event on August 5, 2023, held at Beachwood City Hall.

The Mustang Mach-E has been specifically outfitted for police duties and chosen for its reliability, advanced safety features, and capacity to withstand the demands of law enforcement. In a statement, Beachwood Police Chief Daniel Grispino emphasized the significance of this addition, saying, “This is more than just a car — it’s a commitment to our increased traffic enforcement efforts and the future.” He further highlighted that this initiative aims to reduce the department’s carbon footprint and operating costs, while demonstrating that innovation and public service can coexist.

The Mach-E is projected to save the police department between $2,000 and $3,000 in annual fuel costs. When considering the vehicle’s purchase price of $50,887 along with the expenses for necessary police equipment upgrades, the total cost is comparable to traditional police vehicles, such as the Ford Explorer, which averages $47,247.

Mayor Justin Berns praised Chief Grispino’s leadership, noting, “Chief Grispino’s leadership is driving advancements in public safety for Beachwood. This electric patrol vehicle reflects his responsiveness to community feedback regarding traffic enforcement, while embracing innovation and sustainability.”

In addition to cost savings, the Mustang Mach-E is anticipated to require less maintenance than gas-powered vehicles, further enhancing its appeal. The environmental advantages include lower emissions and a reduced carbon footprint, aligning with broader efforts to promote sustainability in public service.

The National Night Out event will take place from 17:00 to 19:00 on August 5 at Beachwood City Hall, located at 25325 Fairmount Blvd. This free, family-friendly gathering aims to strengthen community ties with law enforcement and will feature a range of activities, including emergency vehicle displays, a meet-and-greet with the BPD K-9 Unit, games, and local food vendors.

As the Beachwood Police Department takes steps towards greener operations, the introduction of the Mustang Mach-E symbolizes a commitment to both community safety and environmental responsibility.
