Amazon Unveils Web Version of Alexa+ to Challenge AI Rivals
Amazon.com has officially launched a web browser version of its Alexa+ assistant, expanding the capabilities of the AI tool beyond its traditional smart speakers and screens. This strategic move positions Alexa+ in direct competition with leading AI chatbots such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, while also enhancing Amazon’s broader AI ecosystem. Following the announcement, Amazon’s stock experienced a nearly 3% increase during midday trading.
Features of Alexa.com
The newly introduced Alexa.com platform enables users to interact with Alexa+ through a web browser. This evolution incorporates familiar features typical of AI chat interfaces. According to Amazon, users are leveraging the assistant to obtain quick answers to complex inquiries, generate text, plan trips, and facilitate their studies. Additionally, Alexa+ can manage appointments and make restaurant reservations, highlighting Amazon’s focus on integrating generative AI into everyday tasks.
This web version comes approximately nine months after the launch of Alexa+, which represented a significant redesign of the voice assistant that has helped to shape the smart assistant market.
Access and Pricing for Users
Currently, the web-based Alexa experience is available only to users with early access to Alexa+. Amazon is committed to providing “seamless integration” across various devices, including Echo smart hubs and Fire TV products. The service is priced at $19.99 per month, although it is complimentary for Amazon Prime members. While specific subscriber figures have not been disclosed, Daniel Rausch, the head of Alexa and Echo, reported to TechCrunch that more than 10 million users have access to Alexa+.
The announcement has generated excitement not only among users but also in financial markets. During midday trading on Monday, Amazon’s stock reached approximately $233. This surge follows a challenging year for the company’s shares, which lagged behind the broader S&P 500, increasing by only 5% due to tariff concerns and investor uncertainty surrounding Amazon’s AI strategy.
Analyst Perspectives on Amazon’s AI Future
Analysts maintain a generally positive outlook regarding Amazon’s AI prospects. Recently, RBC Capital added Amazon to its Top 30 Global Ideas list, citing strong visibility regarding returns from AI infrastructure investments and a diversified revenue base for Amazon Web Services (AWS). The brokerage noted that Amazon stands out as one of the most disciplined hyperscalers in managing capital expenditures related to AI.
As Amazon continues to innovate and adapt within the competitive landscape of artificial intelligence, the launch of the web version of Alexa+ underscores its commitment to enhancing user experience and maintaining relevance in the rapidly evolving technology sector.
