When Hung Nguyen, a 21-year-old from Vietnam, received a full-time job offer as a policy analyst at LoanOptions.ai in Sydney, it marked a significant achievement in his burgeoning career in artificial intelligence. This opportunity arose from a successful internship that Nguyen managed to balance alongside his undergraduate studies in data science and a part-time job.

Nguyen’s journey began when he relocated to Australia in August 2022 to pursue his bachelor’s degree at the SP Jain School of Global Management. His decision was influenced by the school’s scholarship offerings and the appeal of studying in a developed nation known for its job opportunities. Upon arriving in Sydney, he faced the challenge of adapting to a new environment, but quickly found his footing through a part-time job in a restaurant, which helped him gain independence.

In his final year of study, Nguyen secured a three-month internship at LoanOptions.ai, starting in December 2024. Unlike many internships that often include menial tasks, he was entrusted with significant projects, which he embraced wholeheartedly. “I didn’t do anyone’s photocopying or make tea and coffee. I worked on projects,” he noted. His commitment to punctuality and the completion of tasks garnered praise from his supervisors, reinforcing his determination.

Balancing his internship with academic responsibilities proved demanding. Between January and April 2025, he juggled his studies, worked as a hotel receptionist, and contributed to LoanOptions.ai. At one point, he was studying two days a week, interning three days, and fitting in shifts at the hotel. Despite the challenges, Nguyen found the experience rewarding, stating, “I think my work ethic made me stand out.”

Nguyen’s role involved analyzing lender policies and translating them into code, a task that he approached with enthusiasm. He emphasized the importance of a strong work ethic, saying, “Managers can spot a good work ethic.” His diligence paid off when, just a month before graduating, he was offered a full-time position at the company.

His success can be attributed to a solid foundation in mathematics and coding. Throughout his studies, he sought additional resources to enhance his skills, including online courses by renowned educators such as Andrew Ng from Stanford University and Yann LeCun from New York University. His proactive approach to learning allowed him to develop a robust understanding of algorithms and machine learning, making him well-prepared for a career in AI.

Nguyen’s story exemplifies the potential for young professionals in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence. As industries increasingly rely on AI solutions, individuals like Nguyen are paving the way for innovation and advancement. His experience serves as a testament to the value of hard work, determination, and the strategic pursuit of education and opportunity.
