Study Reveals Nutri-Score Labels Misrepresent Soluble Cocoa Quality
Researchers from the University of Granada have found that the Nutri-Score labeling system, widely utilized in Europe to evaluate food quality, fails to accurately represent the nutritional value of soluble cocoa sold in Spain. This study highlights significant shortcomings in the current labeling method, which rates products on a scale from A to D.
The investigation involved an extensive analysis of 54 products from 19 different brands. These products were assessed based on their Nutri-Score ratings, which are intended to guide consumers toward healthier choices. However, the findings indicate that this system does not account for the complex nutritional and metabolic properties inherent in soluble cocoa.
In-Depth Analysis of Nutritional Labeling
Utilizing advanced non-targeted metabolomics techniques, the researchers sought to uncover the true nutritional profile of these cocoa products. While Nutri-Score aims to simplify nutritional information for consumers, the study demonstrates that it inadequately captures the multifaceted nature of soluble cocoa.
The researchers discovered that the Nutri-Score system primarily focuses on certain nutrients while overlooking others that play a critical role in the overall health benefits of cocoa.
