Nelson Labs Marks 40 Years of Innovation in Salt Lake City

Nelson Labs, a prominent player in microbiological and analytical chemistry testing, commemorated its 40th anniversary in Salt Lake City on October 1, 2023. The company has established itself as a leader in ensuring the safety of medical devices and pharmaceuticals through rigorous testing and validation processes.

Commitment to Safety and Innovation

During the anniversary celebration, Joe Shrawder, President of Nelson Labs, emphasized the company’s foundational promise: “If a device touches a patient, its safety should be proven beyond doubt.” This guiding principle continues to drive the organization as it supports innovators in bringing new therapies to market and enhances global quality standards.

Shrawder noted, “Our continued investment here, including our new cleanroom expansion, reflects our confidence in Utah’s life-sciences ecosystem and our responsibility to protect patients everywhere.” The event attracted over a hundred guests, including industry leaders and stakeholders, showcasing the company’s significant impact on the medical field.

Growth and Expansion

Founded in 1985, Nelson Labs has expanded its reach to serve more than 3,000 customers across 12 facilities located in the United States, Mexico, Asia, and Europe. This expansion reflects the company’s adaptability to emerging industry needs.

“Across four decades, our teams have advanced methods from extractables and leachables to packaging integrity, supported thousands of customers on every continent where we operate, and helped strengthen the standards that industry and regulators rely on,” Shrawder explained.

In addition to celebrating its history, Nelson Labs recently broke ground on a cleanroom expansion at its Salt Lake City campus. This project aims to significantly enhance ISO-classified cleanroom capacity to meet the growing demand for independent sterility assurance testing.

As the company looks to the future, Shrawder concluded, “Scaling from one Utah lab to a global network while ensuring science is uncompromised, that’s the accomplishment we’re most proud of and it’s what the next 40 years will build on.” Nelson Labs’ commitment to innovation and safety positions it well for continued success in the evolving landscape of the medical device and pharmaceutical industries.
