NASA Citizen Scientist Benedetta Facini Joins Astronaut Program
Benedetta Facini, a passionate contributor to NASA’s citizen science projects, has been selected as an astronaut candidate by the commercial space company, Titans Space Industries. This exciting announcement came in spring 2023, marking a significant milestone in her journey from citizen scientist to aspiring astronaut. Facini has actively participated in numerous projects including Cloudspotting on Mars, Active Asteroids, and the International Astronomical Collaboration (IASC), showcasing her dedication to advancing scientific research.
Facini became aware of NASA’s citizen science initiatives through colleagues and social media, sparking her curiosity. She explored various programs offered by NASA and soon found ways to participate. Reflecting on her experiences, she noted that working on these projects has instilled in her a sense of curiosity and patience, essential traits for scientific inquiry.
“Even NASA relies on ‘ordinary people’ to carry out research,” she said. “It’s a chance to learn using simple tools.” Her hands-on experience analyzing data, particularly in recognizing cloud patterns from the Mars Climate Sounder, has been invaluable. The collaborative nature of citizen science has also allowed her to connect with many fellow scientists around the world, enhancing her learning experience.
In addition to her scientific pursuits, Facini is a student and a dedicated science communicator. She actively shares her knowledge through social media, schools, and webinars, engaging with diverse audiences, including young students and adults at space festivals across Italy.
“Recently, I achieved a major milestone,” Facini expressed, thrilled about her selection as an astronaut candidate. She is eager to begin her basic training, a crucial step toward her dream of contributing directly to human spaceflight and scientific research.
The path to becoming an astronaut involves more than academic credentials. Facini emphasized the importance of gaining varied experiences. “Every skill can be useful during the selection process,” she explained. Teamwork, survival skills, and adaptability are critical, along with a healthy lifestyle. She also debunked the myth that only elite athletes or geniuses can become astronauts.
Citizen science has played a pivotal role in her professional development, particularly as a science communicator. It has allowed her to demonstrate that anyone can contribute to the space sector, serving as a mentor to many students through the IASC project. The practical data analysis experience she gained has also enriched her academic coursework in physics.
For those interested in citizen science or pursuing a career as an astronaut, Facini has insightful advice. “Stay curious and persistent,” she urged. She encourages aspiring citizen scientists to engage with others in the field, noting that collaboration is a cornerstone of NASA’s citizen science program.
For prospective astronauts, she stresses the importance of diverse experiences. “Stay passionate and never lose your curiosity,” she advised. Facini acknowledges that the journey can be challenging, with potential rejections along the way. “The greatest regret is knowing you didn’t try to make your dream come true,” she added, quoting her inspiration, Italian astronaut Paolo Nespoli: “You need to have the ability and the courage to dream of impossible things.”
As she embarks on this new chapter in her career, Facini expresses gratitude for the NASA Citizen Science programs that inspire students and guide them toward careers in science. “Knowing that I have contributed to helping scientists is incredibly motivating,” she stated. Her journey exemplifies how individuals from diverse backgrounds can make meaningful contributions to the scientific community.
