InterDigital and Razer Launch Haptic Excellence Center in Delaware
InterDigital Inc. has launched a Haptic Excellence Center in partnership with Razer, marking a significant step forward in haptic technology research and development. Based in Wilmington, Delaware, the center will focus on enhancing innovations that combine touch-based feedback with audio and video experiences.
According to a white paper from Futuresource and InterDigital, approximately 4.1 billion consumer devices were equipped with haptic technology as of the end of 2024. The report projects that 53% of consumer devices will feature haptic capabilities by 2028. This collaboration aims to support the integration of haptics into various media formats, enhancing user interaction and engagement.
Advancing Haptic Technology
The newly established center will focus on developing a haptic streaming platform designed to facilitate the creation, encoding, synchronization, and delivery of haptic data alongside audio and video content. This innovative approach is expected to broaden the applications of haptic technology across multiple sectors, including gaming, entertainment, and virtual reality.
In addition to its technological advancements, the Haptic Excellence Center will collaborate with universities to foster research and education related to haptic systems and applications. Rajesh Pankaj, Chief Technology Officer at InterDigital, emphasized the importance of this initiative in promoting collaboration between industry and academia. “Our goal is to advance experimentation and understanding of haptic technologies,” he stated.
Eric Vezzoli, Director of Technology at Razer, highlighted the partnership’s objective of developing an open haptics framework. He noted that this collaboration aims to enhance streaming research, which will facilitate a wider deployment of haptic technology in consumer products.
Future Impact
InterDigital’s commitment to haptic technology reflects a growing trend in the tech industry, where companies are increasingly recognizing the value of immersive experiences. The development of this Haptic Excellence Center not only supports innovation but also positions both InterDigital and Razer as leaders in the evolving landscape of technology that combines tactile feedback with digital content.
As the demand for haptic-enabled devices continues to rise, this collaboration represents a strategic move to meet consumer expectations and integrate cutting-edge technology into everyday experiences. InterDigital, known for its advancements in wireless and video technologies, aims to leverage this partnership to enhance the overall user experience across various platforms.
