InterDigital and Razer Launch Haptic Excellence Center for Innovation
InterDigital Inc. has partnered with Razer to establish a new Haptic Excellence Center in Wilmington, Delaware. This initiative is aimed at enhancing research, development, and education in haptic technology, which integrates touch-based feedback with audio and video for an enriched media experience.
The center will prioritize advancing innovation in haptic applications, with a specific focus on creating a haptic streaming platform. This platform will facilitate the creation, encoding, synchronization, and delivery of haptic data alongside traditional audio and video content. According to a white paper by Futuresource and InterDigital, approximately 4.1 billion consumer devices were equipped with haptic technology by the end of 2024. Projections indicate that 53% of consumer devices will have haptic capabilities by 2028.
Collaboration to Drive Haptic Technology Forward
The Haptic Excellence Center will also collaborate with academic institutions to foster research and education surrounding haptic systems and their applications. Rajesh Pankaj, Chief Technology Officer at InterDigital, emphasized the center’s role in promoting collaboration between industry and academia. This partnership aims to enhance experimentation and deepen understanding of haptic technologies.
Eric Vezzoli, Director of Technology at Razer, noted that the collaboration seeks to develop an open haptics framework. This framework will support streaming research to enable broader deployment of haptic technology across various platforms.
InterDigital, founded in Wilmington, develops advanced wireless and video technologies that are integral to consumer devices and networks. With the establishment of the Haptic Excellence Center, the company aims not only to enhance user experience but also to pave the way for future advancements in haptic technology.
As the demand for immersive media experiences continues to grow, the collaboration between InterDigital and Razer may significantly influence how consumers interact with digital content, making haptic feedback an essential component of future technology.
