Florida Startup Max Space Plans Commercial Space Station Launch by 2027

Max Space, a startup based in Florida, has unveiled plans to launch a prototype of its innovative commercial space station, Thunderbird, by 2027. This ambitious project aims to streamline the construction of space habitats by utilizing expandable technology, enabling the entire station to be transported within a single launch of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket.

The Thunderbird space station is designed to expand to a volume of 12,360 cubic feet (350 cubic meters) once in orbit. This eliminates the need for multiple launches to assemble various modules, marking a significant advancement in space station design. According to SpaceNews, Max Space plans to test its technology with a small prototype known as Mission Evolution, slated for launch during a SpaceX ride-share mission in early 2027. This mission will evaluate the station’s orbital debris protection system and its environmental control and life support system.

Innovative Design and Future Applications

Founded in 2023, Max Space initially aimed to provide expandable module technology to assist other companies in developing their own space stations. However, a shift in NASA’s approach to its Commercial Low Earth Orbit Destinations (CLD) program prompted the company to consider building its own station. NASA is seeking commercial alternatives to the International Space Station, which is expected to retire by 2030. Rather than fixed-price contracts, the agency is now offering smaller, more affordable Space Act Agreements for the development of commercial space stations.

“It was pretty clear that was an opportunity for us to put a proposal forward to show how these modules can really be used for human habitation,” said Saleem Miyan, CEO of Max Space, in an interview with SpaceNews.

What distinguishes Thunderbird from other commercial habitats is its expandable structure, which differs from traditional inflatable modules. The station incorporates soft elements within its interior and features an adjustable layout, allowing the crew to repurpose living spaces for various activities, including running experiments in low Earth orbit. Thunderbird is designed to support a crew of four astronauts at all times, offering a morphic interior structure adaptable to different onboard tasks.

Future Launch Plans and Broader Horizons

Max Space envisions its space station being operational by 2029, with plans to configure Thunderbird for use as a habitat for astronauts traveling to the Moon and Mars. The commercial space station could serve multiple purposes, including research and orbital manufacturing of pharmaceuticals and other materials.
