Energy Innovators Drill Into Oregon’s ‘Super Hot Rocks’ for Clean Power

Researchers from Mazama Energy have achieved a significant breakthrough by drilling into underground rocks heated to an impressive 752 degrees Fahrenheit beneath the Newberry Volcano in central Oregon. This pioneering effort aims to develop a continuous and cleaner power source through geothermal energy. The project has the potential to reshape energy production in the region and beyond.

Innovative Geothermal Techniques

The team successfully created an artificial reservoir between two wells, where they intend to inject cold water and extract steam and hot water for electricity generation. Alain Bonneville, chief geoscientist at Mazama Energy, explained, “What we have done between these two wells, we have created an artificial reservoir… the goal of this project is really to demonstrate that the techniques that we have been using were successful in creating this reservoir.” The steam produced will power turbines, generating electricity for local homes and businesses.

Geothermal energy projects vary widely, with some tapping into shallower geothermal resources for heating and cooling applications. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, this diversity in approach allows for tailored solutions to meet regional energy needs. For example, Massachusetts-based Quaise Energy is exploring drilling depths of up to 12 miles to access nearly limitless thermal energy.

The implications of Mazama’s work extend beyond Oregon, as officials in Nigeria view geothermal energy as a potential solution to their country’s struggling electricity grid. The ability of a single well to provide power for 25,000 homes while using 75% less water than traditional geothermal systems could significantly reduce energy costs and improve reliability.

As the team continues to drill deeper, with plans to reach depths of 2 miles or more, they aim to fully harness the geothermal potential in the area. Bonneville noted, “This will be sort of a world premiere because nobody has done that so far. This is quite unique.” This research is particularly relevant as the Newberry Volcano, located within a region comparable in size to Rhode Island, is recognized as an active volcano. It last erupted approximately 1,300 years ago.

In Oregon, the demand for energy is escalating due to the proliferation of data centers, particularly in towns like Prineville. Geoscience intern Ashlynn Bowles emphasized the importance of finding sustainable energy solutions, noting, “We have a lot of data centers in Prineville, and those use up a lot of electricity. Looking to the future for solutions for where we’re going to see that energy come from is very important.” This sentiment underscores the urgency of developing alternative energy sources as the strain on traditional grids continues to grow.
