Cadillac Schools Adopt Palmer Method for Improved Handwriting
On December 10, 1925, the Cadillac Public Schools made a significant decision to enhance handwriting instruction by adopting the Palmer method. This decision, stemming from a recommendation by a special penmanship committee, marks a concerted effort by the city’s educators to improve student writing skills. The initiative has garnered positive feedback from school officials, including Superintendent B.C. Shankland and grade supervisor Elizabeth Powers, reflecting the faculty’s commitment to professional development.
The Palmer method, which emphasizes a more fluid and efficient style of writing, was introduced at the McKinley building this academic year. Teachers have already begun to see promising results from its implementation, leading to increased enthusiasm among the staff. Many educators are eager to enhance their skills in anticipation of a full rollout of the method across the entire school system.
In a separate event on the same day in 2000, health officials began investigating a case of salmonella poisoning linked to a banquet in Missaukee County that resulted in the death of a Midland resident. According to Dr. Mary Grace Stobierski, manager of the infectious disease epidemiology division at the Michigan Department of Public Health, the local District Health Department No. 10 is leading the inquiry into the gastrointestinal outbreak.
Dr. Stobierski confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, and health officials are working diligently to identify the source of the contamination. The tragic incident underscores the importance of food safety and the vigilance required to prevent such outbreaks.
As Cadillac Public Schools embrace new methodologies for teaching, the health department’s investigation serves as a reminder of the need for community awareness and engagement in both educational and health matters. These events highlight the interconnectedness of public health and education, emphasizing the role of proactive measures in fostering a safe and effective environment for all.
