Fifth-Grade Teacher Wins Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education Award
Brandon Bailey, a fifth-grade teacher at Forest View Elementary in Cadillac, Michigan, has been awarded the prestigious Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education award. This honor recognizes his effective teaching approach, which emphasizes hands-on learning and strong relationships with students. Along with the accolade, Bailey receives a cash prize of $2,000 and qualifies for the $10,000 Educator of the Year award, which will be awarded later this academic year.
The Excellence in Education awards were established by the Michigan Lottery in 2014 to celebrate outstanding public school educators throughout the state. Bailey, who has dedicated 21 years to teaching—eight of which have been at Forest View—attributes his success to his passion for instilling a love of learning in his students.
“I love to teach. I am passionate about it. I found it to be very rewarding to pass on the love of learning to someone else,” Bailey stated. “When I was young, I liked to learn through a hands-on approach, and that is what I wanted to be when I became a teacher.” His philosophy centers on engaging students in active learning, as he believes that involvement significantly enhances their understanding.
Bailey was nominated by Heidi Collins, a parent of a former student. Collins highlighted his ability to foster trust and support both academically and emotionally, creating a positive atmosphere for learning. “Mr. Bailey, without a doubt, goes above and beyond helping students surpass their expectations academically, as well as positively impacting their character, social skills, and emotional development,” Collins remarked.
Reflecting on the nomination, Bailey noted its significance, particularly regarding the relationship he built with Collins’ son. Although the student joined his class later in the year, they quickly connected over shared interests, including fishing and hockey.
The recognition has been met with support from Forest View Elementary Principal Jake Wing, who emphasized the importance of acknowledging educators’ daily contributions. “There are wins every day in classrooms that people don’t always see,” Wing stated. “So it’s nice for him to get this recognition.”
Cadillac Area Public Schools Superintendent Jennifer Brown praised Bailey’s impact on student achievement and classroom culture. “The historic student growth achieved in his classroom is not accidental,” she said. “It reflects a standard Brandon set for himself through hard work, intentional planning, and a relentless focus on rigorous learning.” Brown added that Bailey’s commitment strengthens both Forest View Elementary and the district overall.
Bailey earned his bachelor’s degree from Aquinas College and a master’s degree from Nova Southeastern University. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, he also serves as the high school girls golf coach.
Nominees for the Michigan Lottery Excellence in Education awards are evaluated based on criteria including excellence, dedication, inspiration, leadership, and effectiveness in advancing student achievement. Bailey’s recognition stands as a testament to his commitment to fostering a nurturing and engaging learning environment for his students.
