Pontiac Studio Transforms Ashes into Healing Memorial Art

At the Epiphany Glass Studio in Pontiac, Michigan, owner and artist April Wagner has found a unique way to help families navigate grief by transforming cremation ashes into beautiful glass sculptures. This innovative approach provides a tangible connection to loved ones, allowing them to be memorialized in a meaningful and artistic form.

Wagner explains that the chemical composition of cremation ashes closely resembles that of glass. “Very interestingly, human or pet bone material is super similar in chemical makeup to the makeup of our glass formula,” she noted. This similarity allows her to incorporate ashes into molten glass, resulting in bespoke pieces that serve not just as art, but as emotional touchstones.

A Personal Journey of Healing Through Art

The studio has offered various art pieces for years, but Wagner’s focus on memorial art has emerged as a powerful avenue for healing. Each sculpture is handcrafted, with a portion of ashes fused into the glass, whether created during personal workshops or ordered online. Wagner describes this process as “healing through beauty,” emphasizing its impact on clients who seek solace in their loss.

“The feedback we receive is that people appreciate having their loved ones immortalized in art,” Wagner shared. “Instead of just an urn filled with ashes, they have something colorful and vibrant, like a heart or a flower, that keeps their memory alive.”

For clients like Lish Dorset, creating a memorial piece for her deceased cat, Ronnie, became a vital part of her healing journey. Ronnie was the first cat Dorset adopted as an adult, and their bond was significant. “We were together on our own for a couple of years, and then I met my husband, and we were just kind of a little trio for the longest time,” she recalled.

Dorset faced profound loss when Ronnie passed away on her birthday. “I wasn’t expecting to spend my birthday that way, and so it was really, really difficult,” she said. Participating in the glass-making workshop offered her a path to process her grief.

Creating Lasting Memories

At the studio, the creation process typically takes about 15 minutes, allowing clients to engage directly with the art. Shannon Teeple, the studio manager, explained that they offer a range of memorial pieces available online in various styles and colors. The studio also hosts workshops twice a year, providing clients with the chance to craft their own pieces alongside the artists.

Dorset described the workshop experience as deeply moving, saying, “Everyone came from a different walk of life, had a different story to tell, and a different person to celebrate.” For her, the finished glass piece serves as both a reminder of her beloved cat and a source of comfort. “It really was closure, and now I get to see this every day. It’s just a happy reminder.”

The unique creations at the Epiphany Glass Studio transcend mere decorative items; they are emotional bridges that connect families to their memories. With each piece, Wagner not only creates art but also fosters an environment where grief can transform into something beautiful and lasting.
