Community Mourns the Loss of Bill Plant, Retired Officer and Family Man
William (Bill) Plant, a retired police officer and cherished family member, passed away recently in Torrance, California. His life spanned over 83 years, filled with service, love, and commitment to his community and family.
Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Bill served his country as a radioman in the United States Coast Guard. His military career took him to various locations, including Newfoundland, California, and the South Pacific. It was during his posting at the Point Vicente Lighthouse in the spring of 1962 that he met Jeannine, the love of his life. Their encounter at Redondo Beach marked the beginning of a lifelong partnership.
Bill and Jeannine married later that same year in December, embarking on a journey that would last for 63 years. Together, they built a home in South Redondo, where they created countless memories. While Bill was stationed on the small island of Ulithi, Jeannine took the initiative to purchase their forever home, a testament to their shared commitment and love.
After eight years of dedicated service in the Coast Guard, Bill transitioned to a career with the Redondo Beach Police Department, where he served the community for nearly 30 years. His commitment to public service left a lasting impact on many, and his dedication was remembered fondly by colleagues and residents alike.
Beyond his professional life, Bill had a passion for nurturing his home and garden. He enjoyed creating an environment that welcomed hummingbirds and monarch butterflies, and he took pleasure in reading and observing the ocean’s wildlife from the Esplanade. However, his greatest joy came from spending time with his family, especially with Jeannine.
Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Jeannine, and their three children: Nathan (Jennifer), Adam (Miki), and Sara (Sam). He is also remembered by his sister, Virginia (Richard), along with extended family and friends who will miss him dearly.
A private celebration of Bill’s life is planned for a later date, allowing family and close friends to honor his memory in a personal setting. His legacy of love, service, and dedication will undoubtedly continue to resonate within the community he served so faithfully.
