University of Guam Student Wins NIH Scholarship for Research
University of Guam (UOG) student Reina Faye Evangelista has been awarded the prestigious National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship for Individuals from Disadvantaged Backgrounds. This scholarship, aimed at fostering future leaders in biomedical research, provides substantial financial support and research opportunities to eligible students.
As a junior majoring in Chemistry and Biology, Evangelista is among nine recipients chosen from a competitive pool of over 100 applicants nationwide for the 2025-2026 academic year. The scholarship offers up to $20,000 per academic year to cover tuition, educational, and living expenses. In addition, recipients are required to participate in a paid, ten-week summer research internship at the NIH, enhancing their practical research experience.
Upon graduation, Evangelista and her fellow scholarship recipients are expected to work at the NIH for one year for each year of scholarship support received. This commitment not only helps to advance their careers but also contributes to the NIH’s mission of improving health through research.
Evangelista is actively involved in various initiatives beyond her academic pursuits. She serves as an undergraduate trainee under the U54 Pacific Island Partnership for Cancer Health Equity (PIPCHE) grant, which focuses on addressing health disparities in the Pacific Islands. Additionally, she co-directs the UOG Infrastructure for the Chålan Åmte Advising Group, an organization comprising medical students and professionals dedicated to enhancing Guam’s healthcare workforce through mentorship and advocacy.
“We are so happy that Reina has received the NIH scholarship and are proud of her latest accomplishment,” stated Rachael Leon Guerrero, PhD, dean of the UOG College of Natural and Applied Sciences. “It’s always thrilling to see our students succeed.”
The NIH scholarship program plays a crucial role in supporting students from disadvantaged backgrounds, empowering them to pursue careers in biomedical research. Evangelista’s achievement not only highlights her dedication and hard work but also serves as an inspiration for fellow students aspiring to make a difference in the field of healthcare.
