Thomas Jefferson University women’s basketball coach Tom Shirley has been selected for induction into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. This announcement was made just before his team’s game against Caldwell University on Saturday. The ceremony will take place on September 19, 2026, as part of the Hall’s Class of 2026, which includes a total of ten distinguished athletes and coaches.

Shirley has dedicated an impressive 36 years to coaching the Rams, making him one of the most celebrated figures in women’s college basketball. His remarkable coaching career boasts over 922 victories, the highest for any active Division II coach, and includes multiple championships across different athletic conferences.

Recognition and Achievements

During his tenure, Shirley has led the Rams to five championships in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference, along with two titles in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference and two more in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. His coaching prowess has earned him the title of CACC Coach of the Year four times, including back-to-back honors in 2024 and 2025. Additionally, he was named the American Women’s Sports Federation Division II Coach of the Year in 1993.

In a statement reflecting on his induction, Shirley expressed gratitude, saying, “I am honored to be recognized by the Pa. Sports Hall of Fame. I do realize there is a group of individuals that have assisted me in receiving this recognition. Thank you to the players, alumni, coaches, and staff.”

Historic Season and Future Goals

Shirley has presided over one of the most successful seasons in program history during the 2023-24 season, where the Rams achieved a record of 32-2, which included a stunning 23 consecutive wins. The team also advanced to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive year. Currently, the Rams hold a record of 17-10 and 11-8 for the ongoing season, following a narrow 48-45 defeat to Caldwell.

The induction ceremony will celebrate Shirley’s extensive contributions to basketball and sports in Pennsylvania. James Parrella, president of the Hall of Fame, stated, “This is a significant moment celebrating Coach Shirley’s contributions to basketball and sports in Pennsylvania.” This recognition not only highlights Shirley’s individual achievements but also showcases the enduring impact he has had on his players and the broader athletic community.
