Tampa, Florida, has been recognized as the second-best city for veterans to live, according to a recent survey conducted by WalletHub. The comparison involved the 100 largest cities across the United States, evaluating them on 19 key factors related to livability, affordability, and veteran-friendly resources. Austin, Texas, claimed the top spot in this evaluation.

The WalletHub survey highlighted several reasons why Tampa ranks highly for veterans. Factors such as rising income expectations, military discounts, and the availability of veterans’ services contributed to the city’s favorable position. Chip Lupo, a WalletHub Analyst, emphasized the importance of providing veterans with a supportive environment as they transition back into civilian life.

“When veterans return home from serving our nation, it’s important for them to live in a place that provides good education and employment opportunities, along with access to quality care for their physical and mental health,” Lupo stated. “The best cities for veterans have all these characteristics, plus added bonuses like large veteran populations for community support, and many restaurants and entertainment venues that offer veteran discounts.”

The top five cities identified in the survey are as follows:
1. Austin, TX
2. Tampa, FL
3. Madison, WI
4. Raleigh, NC
5. Colorado Springs, CO

Orlando, Florida, also made the list, coming in seventh place for the best cities for veterans. Tampa’s ranking is bolstered by its substantial offerings in arts and entertainment, with the city holding the 29th-highest number of establishments providing military discounts. Additionally, Tampa boasts the eighth-highest number of restaurants offering similar discounts.

Veterans in Tampa have access to a significant number of resources, including the sixth-most VA benefits facilities per capita and the third-most VA health facilities per capita, according to the survey. Presently, there are nearly 17.6 million veterans residing in the United States, many of whom encounter challenges when reintegrating into civilian life.

Despite a relatively low unemployment rate of 3.1% for veterans—compared to 4.3% for the general population—issues such as homelessness persist. Currently, around 33,000 homeless veterans face significant challenges in securing stable housing.
