The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office is organizing a gun safety event on August 23, 2024, aimed at reducing the presence of unwanted firearms in the community. This initiative will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the La Mesa Civic Center, located at 4825 Date Avenue. The event seeks to encourage residents to turn in firearms safely and anonymously.

Joining the Sheriff’s Office are several law enforcement agencies, including the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, the La Mesa Police Department, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation Division of Adult Parole Operations, and the Sycuan Tribal Police Department. Together, these organizations aim to promote community safety by facilitating the removal of functional firearms from the streets.

Participants who surrender a working firearm will receive a $100 gift card for handguns, rifles, and shotguns. In an effort to discourage the possession of more dangerous weapons, those turning in assault weapons will be rewarded with a $200 gift card. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that participants will remain anonymous, and no questions will be asked regarding the surrendered firearms.

Event Details and Safety Measures

In addition to the incentive program, the event will provide free cable locks for firearms, available while supplies last. Individuals interested in participating are advised to place unloaded firearms in the trunk of their vehicles and await instructions from attending deputies or officers upon arrival.

Authorities have stated that all surrendered weapons will be destroyed, ensuring they are permanently removed from circulation. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to enhancing community safety and reducing gun violence through proactive measures.

As this event approaches, residents are encouraged to consider the safe disposal of unwanted firearms. The collaborative effort by local law enforcement underscores the importance of community involvement in addressing gun safety issues.
