Reflecting on Gratitude: A Call for Thankfulness This Season
As the year draws to a close, Scott “Q” Marcus reflects on the importance of gratitude during a time of global challenges. In his latest column, he revisits themes he first explored in 2004, emphasizing the enduring relevance of thankfulness even as the world faces numerous difficulties.
Gratitude Amid Global Challenges
Marcus acknowledges the troubling landscape of 2025, highlighting the ongoing conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, rising political tensions, and escalating climate issues. He notes the stark reality of food insecurity, increasing healthcare costs, and job losses affecting many around the globe. Despite these challenges, he urges readers to cultivate a sense of appreciation. As he quotes Brother David Steindl-Rast, a Benedictine monk and advocate for gratitude, “It is not happiness that makes us grateful. It is gratefulness that makes us happy.”
With the holiday season upon us, Marcus encourages individuals to take a moment to reflect on the people who provide support and guidance. Family and friends play a crucial role in navigating life’s complexities, offering both solace and celebration. He emphasizes that expressing gratitude, even when it feels insufficient, is a vital step toward recognizing the abundance in our lives.
Sharing Gratitude Through Action
In an effort to embody the spirit of thankfulness, Marcus will coordinate the fifth annual “Free Decoration and Toy Giveaway” on December 6, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This event will take place at the Eureka Center for Spiritual Living, located at 239 Buhne St.. Thousands of dollars worth of decorations and toys will be distributed at no cost, inviting community members to share in the spirit of generosity.
Marcus believes that gratitude should not be limited to a specific season but should be a continuous practice. He encourages others to find ways to express their thankfulness and to let it extend beyond personal circles. “If you wish to be excessive this season, let your excess be in your gratitude,” he states, inviting everyone to spread their appreciation outward.
Ultimately, Marcus’s message serves as a reminder that even in challenging times, there are reasons to be thankful. By embracing and sharing gratitude, individuals can foster a sense of community and hope for the future.
