In a celebration of its football legacy, Penn State University is set to honor former wide receiver Joe Nastasi as the honorary captain for the upcoming game against Florida International University (FIU) on September 23, 2023. This recognition continues a tradition at Penn State, following a similar tribute to former player Adrian Amos during the previous week’s game against Nevada.

Nastasi, who played under legendary coach Joe Paterno from 1995 to 1998, was a vital part of the Nittany Lions’ success during his collegiate career. He contributed to three nine-win seasons and was part of the team during the standout 1996 season, which culminated in an impressive 11-2 record. Over his tenure, Nastasi participated in four bowl games, helping the team achieve a 3-1 record in those high-stakes matchups.

As a wide receiver, Nastasi appeared in 43 games, accumulating 45 receptions for a total of 741 yards and seven touchdowns. One of his most memorable moments came during a snowy game against No. 13 Michigan in 1995, where he scored on a fake field goal, contributing to a significant upset for the Lions at Beaver Stadium.

Today, Nastasi continues to contribute to the sport as the wide receivers coach at State College High School. His connection to Penn State remains strong, as his son, Donte Nastasi, is a walk-on cornerback on the university’s roster for the 2025 season.

Before the game, Nastasi will join the Nittany Lions’ captains for the coin toss, where he is expected to energize the crowd with a spirited chant of “We are.” The game is scheduled to kick off at noon local time and will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network, inviting fans to witness the honor bestowed upon a player who made significant contributions to the Penn State football program.

As Penn State honors its past, it also builds excitement for the current season, aiming to inspire both players and fans alike through these meaningful traditions.
