Dairy Emissions Could Drop 20% with New Farming Practices
Research conducted by a multidisciplinary team at Penn State University reveals that adopting innovative management practices in dairy farming could potentially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 20%. The researchers advocate for two key practices: continuous cover and anaerobic digestion. Continuous cover involves maintaining vegetation on fields throughout the year, which helps prevent soil erosion and nutrient runoff. By ensuring that the land remains covered, farmers can mitigate the adverse effects of heavy rainfall and promote healthier soil.
Anaerobic digestion is another promising method identified in the study. This microbial process transforms manure and plant organic matter, or biomass, into biogas. The produced biogas, primarily composed of methane, can be utilized as a renewable energy source. Implementing anaerobic digestion not only helps manage waste effectively but also provides a sustainable energy alternative for dairy farms.
