Paul Costelloe, Fashion Designer for Princess Diana, Dies at 80
Paul Costelloe, the renowned fashion designer who created memorable pieces for the late Princess Diana, has passed away at the age of 80. His company confirmed the news, stating that he died following a short illness while surrounded by his family in London.
Costelloe’s influence on the fashion industry was profound. He established a fashion house celebrated for its luxurious fabrics and innovative designs, with his operations based in central London and a family-owned manufacturing site located in the Ancona region of Italy.
In a statement released on Saturday, his label expressed deep sorrow over his passing, highlighting his legacy in the fashion world. “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costelloe,” the statement read. “He was surrounded by his wife and seven children and passed peacefully in London.”
Early Life and Career
Born in Dublin in 1945, Costelloe was the son of a tailor who specialized in raincoats. This early exposure to the fashion industry sparked his interest in design. He began his formal education at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture fashion school in Paris, where he honed his skills. However, much of his knowledge came from observing prominent designers such as Emanuel Ungaro and Pierre Cardin during a transformative period in the fashion world.
Costelloe’s career took off when he started as an assistant to designer Jacques Esterel. He later relocated to Milan to work with British retailer Marks & Spencer as they attempted to penetrate the Italian market. Although this venture ultimately failed, Costelloe found success working with the luxury department store La Rinascente.
His journey continued in the United States, where he worked for the Anne Fogarty label. Eventually, Costelloe launched his own fashion house, which expanded to include a wide range of products, including womenswear, menswear, bags, and accessories.
Connection with Princess Diana
A significant milestone in Costelloe’s career occurred in 1983 when he was appointed personal designer to Princess Diana. This association lasted until her untimely death in 1997. The connection began when one of Diana’s ladies-in-waiting noticed Costelloe’s designs. In a recent interview with Irish broadcaster RTE, he recalled the moment he was first introduced to the royal: “I looked out at Hyde Park and I said: ‘God, this is it, Paul, you have made it!’”
Costelloe’s designs for Diana included elegant evening wear and iconic pieces that captured the public’s imagination. His work not only defined a significant era in royal fashion but also left a lasting impact on the broader fashion scene.
The loss of Paul Costelloe marks the end of an illustrious chapter in fashion design, remembered for his creativity and contributions to the industry. His legacy will continue to resonate through the many designs and the lives he touched during his remarkable career.
