Oasis Nightclub Secures Future with $4 Million Donation
San Francisco’s iconic LGBTQ+ nightclub, Oasis, has successfully avoided closure thanks to a $4 million donation from philanthropists Mary and Mark Stevens. Announced on December 26, 2023, this generous gift allows the club, located at 298 11th St. in the South of Market neighborhood, to purchase its building and secure its future amid rising operational costs and lingering pandemic-related debts.
The announcement was made by Oasis owner and artistic director D’Arcy Drollinger, who described the donation as a “Christmas miracle moment.” Drollinger expressed profound gratitude for the Stevens family’s support, emphasizing that this act reflects the heart of San Francisco. “Saving Oasis is crucial for providing a space for artists to take risks, share their stories, and build sustainable careers,” Drollinger stated.
Plans for Renovation and Future Programs
Due to the recent developments, Oasis will temporarily close after New Year’s Eve to undergo renovations and strategic restructuring. This pause, initially perceived as a farewell, will instead serve as a catalyst for revitalizing the venue and enhancing its programming for 2026. Investor Greg Sottolano will oversee the business aspects of the club, allowing Drollinger to focus on the creative direction.
Since its opening on December 31, 2014, Oasis has established itself as a cultural hub for LGBTQ+ expression and entertainment. The venue has hosted numerous events, from cabaret performances to themed parties, showcasing a diverse array of queer artists. Innovative initiatives like Meals on Heels and Oasis TV have further solidified its role as a community cornerstone.
A Transformative Opportunity for Oasis
The Stevens family’s philanthropic intervention has not only saved Oasis from potential closure but has also opened doors for future fundraising campaigns aimed at additional improvements. The club’s narrative is now being documented, capturing this transformative chapter in its history.
Sky Stevens, a representative of the Stevens family and a frequent patron of the club, expressed excitement about the future of Oasis. “My family and I are eager to see what this next era of Oasis brings to San Francisco,” she remarked.
With renewed hope and a commitment to serving its community, Oasis stands poised to continue its legacy as a vital space for artistic expression and LGBTQ+ culture in San Francisco.
