North Ridgeville Corn Festival Contributes $4,000 for AEDs
The North Ridgeville Corn Festival has made a significant contribution to public safety by donating nearly $4,000 to the North Ridgeville Police Department for the purchase of two automated external defibrillators (AEDs). During a City Council meeting on August 15, 2023, John Butkowski, president of the festival committee, presented a check for $3,984 aimed at replacing two outdated devices that are crucial in emergency medical situations.
The donation underscores the festival’s long-standing commitment to community support. “The Corn Festival has been a part of this community for 51 years, and we believe in giving back,” Butkowski stated. He highlighted the need for the police department to update the AEDs, which have reached the end of their service life. The funds are intended to enhance the department’s ability to respond effectively to cardiac emergencies.
Importance of AEDs in Emergency Response
Butkowski acknowledged the importance of having functional AEDs readily available, especially during critical moments when every second counts. He expressed hope that the officers would seldom need to use the life-saving devices, yet recognized their vital role in ensuring community safety. The contribution reflects the festival committee’s pride in supporting local emergency services and enhancing public health outcomes.
The North Ridgeville Corn Festival, held annually in the second week of August, began as a celebration in honor of the nation’s bicentennial. Over the years, it has evolved into a three-day event featuring live entertainment, a corn-eating contest, and a grand parade. Festival organizers report that the event has raised over $250,000 for civic and charitable projects throughout its history, demonstrating a strong legacy of community involvement.
Mayor Kevin Corcoran praised the donation, stating, “The Corn Festival has been around for a long time, and there’s a long history of giving back. We appreciate the donation to the police department tonight.” This sentiment reflects the collaborative spirit of the festival and its commitment to improving the quality of life in North Ridgeville.
As the community prepares for this year’s festivities, the donation serves as a reminder of the festival’s impact beyond entertainment. It highlights the importance of partnerships between local organizations and public services in fostering a safer environment for all residents.
