Exhibition Unveils Hidden Struggles of LGBTQIA+ Veterans in Raleigh
The Pullen Arts Center in Raleigh is currently showcasing an exhibition titled The Road Through, which features poignant portraits and narratives of LGBTQIA+ veterans. This exhibition examines the often-overlooked experiences of service members who served under the controversial Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy. Created by Theresa Scott, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran and photographer, the exhibition employs a combination of photography and oral history to document these individuals’ struggles and triumphs.
The Road Through highlights the complex challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ service members as they navigated their military careers while concealing their identities. According to an official announcement from the City of Raleigh, Scott’s work aims to illuminate the personal conflicts and systemic obstacles these veterans encountered during their service. Drawing upon her own experiences as both a Marine and a police officer, Scott provides a unique perspective that adds depth to the stories presented in the exhibition.
The exhibition is not only a visual representation of these veterans’ lives but also serves as an educational tool for viewers. By sharing these narratives, Scott hopes to foster greater understanding and empathy regarding the realities faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals in the military. The project seeks to connect audiences with the emotional and social implications of serving under a policy that forced many to live in secrecy.
Visitors can attend a special artist talk and reception on March 26, 2024, at 5:30 p.m., providing an opportunity to engage with Scott and learn more about the stories behind the portraits. Admission to the exhibition is free, and the gallery is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on weekends from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Located at 105 Pullen Road in Raleigh, the Pullen Arts Center is part of the city’s Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Resources department. For those interested in exploring this vital aspect of military history and LGBTQIA+ experiences, additional information about the exhibition can be found on the center’s official website.
Through The Road Through, the Pullen Arts Center offers a significant platform for recognizing the sacrifices and challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ veterans, contributing to a broader dialogue about inclusivity and acceptance within the military and society at large.
