Harry Agner, a 95-year-old resident of Salisbury, North Carolina, received the state’s highest honor, the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, during a ceremony on October 10, 2023. Recognized for his extensive contributions to public service and community engagement, Agner’s humility was evident as he expressed disbelief at receiving such a prestigious award. “I could not believe it was happening to me,” he remarked, reflecting on the moment of recognition.

The award was presented by State Representative Harry Warren during a weekly veterans luncheon held at the Christiana Lutheran Church. Letters of recommendation were submitted to the governor by Warren, along with support from Ray Paradowski of the Elks organization and Rev. Carl Michael Haynes. These endorsements highlighted Agner’s lifelong dedication to civic engagement, leadership in community initiatives, and mentorship of future leaders.

Celebrating a Life of Service

Warren emphasized Agner’s impact, stating, “Harry is being recognized for a lifetime of public service that has strengthened civic institutions and uplifted countless North Carolinians.” He further noted that Agner embodies the values of resilience, generosity, and service, which define North Carolina. “It would not be an exaggeration to say that it would take the remainder of the afternoon to share even a summary of Harry’s life,” he added.

Agner has a storied history of service, particularly with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Rowan Shrine Club. His military career spanned 23 years, culminating in a rank of captain in the Army National Guard, from which he retired in 1972. Agner has dedicated over six decades to working with veterans, aiming to enhance their lives and ensure they receive the care promised by the nation. “I served 63 years working with veterans, and I enjoyed every minute of it,” he shared.

Agner’s commitment to service extends beyond his military career. He has held leadership roles within the American Legion Harold B. Jarrett Post 342 and was inducted into the American Legion Baseball Hall of Fame for his two decades of managing concessions. In 2023, he received the Elks Lodge #699 Lifetime Service Award for his dedication to veterans and the community.

Community Impact and Legacy

Former Salisbury Mayor Karen Alexander proclaimed October 10 as “Harry Agner Day” in recognition of his contributions. Agner is also known for his long-standing ownership of the Chicken & Oyster Shack, a beloved restaurant in Spencer.

Reflecting on his family, Agner expressed pride in his children and grandchildren, including Steve Agner, Vickie Keene, and Denise Hallett. He has emphasized that his life’s work has never been about seeking recognition, stating, “I have never done anything to get recognized. I did it because I wanted to do it. That is the way I live.”

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine is awarded to individuals who have made significant contributions to North Carolina through public service and community involvement. Agner now joins a distinguished group of recipients, becoming the only Agner in the state to receive this honor. His legacy reflects a lifetime commitment to serving others, ensuring that the values of service and stewardship endure for future generations.
