New Braunfels Initiative Aims to Brighten Christmas for Young Adults
A local initiative in New Braunfels, Texas, is working to make Christmas a memorable occasion for young adults with disabilities. Decade Day Service, founded by Jonathan Fraley, is collecting Christmas gifts, sensory items, and celebration supplies for approximately 17 to 20 participants in their program. Fraley expressed his motivation, stating, “Above all, they’re just a tight group of friends, and they deserve the world.”
Fraley’s cousin and volunteer, Colton Floyd, highlighted the unique challenges faced by many of the young adults in the program. Many reside in group homes where donations are the norm, and they often do not have the opportunity to choose their own gifts. “A lot of these kids come from group homes,” Floyd noted. “And a lot of their presents are just donated, and they never really get to pick their presents. This year, that’s what we’re going to change.”
Community Support Fuels Holiday Spirit
The initiative extends beyond just holiday gifts. According to Fraley, financial contributions also support year-round outings for these young adults. Activities include visits to Morgan’s Wonderland, bowling, gym sessions, movies, and various community events. “We eat together, we go shopping together, we play disc golf together,” he elaborated. “We do everything.”
The collective efforts of the community are crucial as the organization approaches its fundraising goal. They are seeking further assistance through their GoFundMe page to ensure they can provide an enjoyable holiday experience. Floyd emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “It’s important to let them know other people are thinking about them. We just try to give them the most normal life that we can.”
This initiative underlines the value of inclusivity and compassion, especially during the holiday season. With the community’s support, Decade Day Service aims to bring joy and a sense of belonging to these young adults, who often face isolation. The program is a reminder of the impact that thoughtful gestures can have on individuals with disabilities, fostering a spirit of togetherness and celebration.
