Minneapolis Initiative Celebrates Support for Over 6,700 Students
In a significant achievement, the Stable Homes Stable Schools Initiative (SHSS) in Minneapolis has provided support to over 6,700 students as it enters its sixth year. This collaborative program addresses the critical issues of housing stability and educational success, particularly for vulnerable families in the city. The initiative has been instrumental in promoting school engagement by ensuring that students have reliable housing.
The SHSS primarily focuses on assisting single-parent households, which constitute 81 percent of the families served, while also meeting the needs of BIPOC families, who represent more than 90 percent of its beneficiaries. In a statement, Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the positive outcomes of the program, stating, “Families are staying housed, kids are staying in school, and Minneapolis is stronger for it. This is what happens when city, school, and community partners come together and stay committed.”
Partnerships Driving Stability and Success
The SHSS is the result of a partnership involving multiple stakeholders, including Hennepin County, Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), the YMCA of the North, and the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority. The initiative also receives support from the Pohlad Family Foundation. According to Abdi Warsame, Executive Director/CEO of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority, “It epitomizes what is possible through the power of partnership,” highlighting the collaborative nature of the initiative.
The program operates with a financial commitment of $2.2 million from the city, along with an additional $1.4 million proposed in the Mayor’s budget for 2026. Furthermore, SHSS benefits from a two-year grant of $855,000 from Minnesota Housing under the Homework Starts at Home program.
Crucial Services for Families
Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams, Superintendent of MPS, has highlighted the importance of such funding, stating, “The Stable Homes Stable Schools program provides access to an essential foundation for learning: a safe and stable place to call home each night.” The initiative offers vital housing placement and stabilization services across 24 elementary schools, extending its influence to all 43 MPS elementary schools.
The program aims to uplift families by providing resources that empower them to make informed choices regarding housing stability. Matt Smith, Executive Director of YMCA Youth and Family Services, commented, “We are committed to providing services that uplift and enable families to make strong choices when it comes to housing stability.”
For families facing immediate challenges such as eviction, SHSS connects them with essential resources, including HomeLine for legal aid and Tenant Resource Connections for eviction prevention support. Families with students enrolled at SHSS-affiliated schools can also access the SHSS Housing Stability Fund for additional assistance.
The SHSS initiative stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and community commitment in addressing the intertwined challenges of housing and education in Minneapolis. By continuing to prioritize these essential services, the city aims to foster a more stable and supportive environment for its students and their families.
