Marion P. Thomas Charter School Launches $125K Fundraising Campaign

Marion P. Thomas Charter School in Newark has initiated “Village 25,” a year-long fundraising campaign to commemorate its 25 years of educational service and community impact. The school aims to raise $125,000 to provide post-secondary scholarships, enhance academic innovation, and create vibrant learning environments for future leaders.

The campaign will officially launch with the Village Awards Gala on October 23, 2023, hosted by Alfred Edmond Jr. of Black Enterprise. This inaugural event will take place at the school’s high school campus and will highlight the achievements of its students through performances, culinary showcases, and impactful stories.

Mo Butler, honorary chair of the Village Awards Gala, emphasized the importance of the initiative, stating, “Village 25 is a call to action — a way for us to rally around children and invest in opportunities that will carry them forward.” The event aims to provide a unique experience, showcasing how donations directly support the programs and opportunities that benefit students daily.

Awards and Recognitions at the Village Gala

The Village Awards Gala will honor several individuals and partners who embody the mission of Marion P. Thomas Charter School. Among the honorees is Dr. Mariame Fofana, an alumna and emergency medical doctor, who will receive the Torch Award. Dr. Karen Thomas, co-founder and Emeritus CEO/Superintendent of the school, will be recognized with the Sankofa Award for her pivotal role in shaping the institution.

Additionally, Rev. Ronald Slaughter, pastor of St. James AME Church, will receive the Heart of the Village Award for his ongoing support of the school community. The Liberty Science Center will be honored with the Village Builder Award for its contributions in providing engaging STEM programming to students and families.

The Tree of Knowledge Award will be presented to an exemplary staff member, selected by votes from students, staff, and parents. Other visionary leaders who have been instrumental in the school’s growth over the past 25 years will also be recognized during the gala.

A Legacy of Leadership and Community Impact

Superintendent Angela Mincy reflected on the school’s legacy, stating, “These honorees remind us that the Village is more than a school; it’s a legacy of leadership, service, and resilience.” She highlighted that the 25th anniversary serves as a crucial moment to mobilize resources and reinvest in the community’s future.

The campaign underscores the school’s journey, which began with just four classrooms and 60 students. Today, Marion P. Thomas Charter School encompasses a network of four campuses that serve over 1,300 scholars. Notably, it stands out as one of the few charter schools in New Jersey founded and led by Black educators.

As the Village 25 campaign unfolds, community leaders and supporters are encouraged to contribute to this initiative focused on transforming lives and nurturing the next generation. As Pastor Vincent Rouse expressed, “This campaign isn’t just about raising funds — it’s about raising futures.”
