Longview ISD Mourns Doris McQueen, 95, Namesake of Local School

Doris McQueen, a respected figure in Longview, Texas, and the namesake of a local school, passed away at the age of 95. Her death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to education and community service. McQueen was born in Marshall and graduated from Longview High School in 1947, where she began her career as a bookkeeper in the school district’s business office.

After spending an impressive 46 years in the Longview Independent School District, McQueen retired as the director of business services and financial consultant to the school boards. Her contributions to the district were recognized in 1987 when the Doris McQueen Primary School was named in her honor. She described this recognition as “the honor of my lifetime.”

Community Contributions and Recognitions

Beyond her work in education, McQueen was a committed community leader. She played a pivotal role as a charter member of the East Texas Professional Credit Union board of directors. Additionally, she was involved with the Zonta Club of Longview, the Greater East Texas United Way, the Tall Pines Chapter of the American Businesswomen’s Association, and the Texas Association of Business Officials.

Her accomplishments did not go unnoticed. McQueen received several accolades throughout her career, including being named the ABWA Businesswoman of the Year and recognized as a Zonta Woman of Achievement. Doris McQueen is survived by her sister Nita Wiley and son-in-law Dean Wiley, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Lorene Bruner and Janelle Cates.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on January 10, 2024, at the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, located at 3800 Judson Road in Longview. As the community reflects on her legacy, McQueen’s impact on education and local service will be remembered fondly by many.
