Kaua’i Recognizes GoFarm Hawaiʻi and Iwikua as Water Conservation Leaders
Kaua’i celebrated local efforts in environmental sustainability on March 15, 2025, as the Kaua’i Department of Water (DOW) and the Soil and Water Conservation Districts honored the recipients of the 2025 Water Conservationists of the Year awards. The recognition highlights the crucial role of water conservation on the island, with DOW’s Manager and Chief Engineer, Joe Tait, emphasizing the need for responsible water use. “Water is the lifeblood of our island, and everyone should be inspired to use it wisely for future generations to come,” he stated.
The award for the East Kaua’i Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) went to GoFarm Hawaiʻi, which has made significant strides through its innovative farmer training program. This initiative has successfully trained fourteen cohorts of new farmers, equipping them with cost-efficient and environmentally friendly agricultural techniques. Jin-Wah Lau, a farm coach at GoFarm Hawaiʻi, highlighted the program’s focus on practical methods: “We focus on everyday methods that conserve water and nurture living systems in our soils, including minimal tilling, cover cropping, rotating fields, using drip irrigation with surface water, and regularly testing soil to ensure we water only when needed.”
On the west side of the island, Iwikua received the award from the West Kaua’i SWCD for its dedication to integrating ancient practices with modern sustainability. The organization is committed to reviving the traditional ahupuaʻa system, which promotes sustainable land and resource management. Josh Mori, Executive Director of Iwikua, articulated their mission: “At Iwikua, we strive to strengthen the community’s connection to kuleana and the function of ahupuaʻa. We offer gardening support, agroforestry seminars, aquaponics programs, and community produce sales. We also offer wellness initiatives.”
The significance of these awards extends beyond mere recognition. The Soil and Water Conservation Districts play a vital role in assisting landowners to manage soil and water resources effectively. They are part of a national network of nearly 3,000 districts dedicated to promoting sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Their work focuses on minimizing the environmental impact of farming by enhancing water use efficiency and controlling soil and water erosion, which is essential for maintaining the ecological health of Hawaiʻi.
