Helena, Alabama, has officially been designated a Semi-Quincentennial City by America 250 and American Village as part of the ongoing preparations for the nation’s 250th anniversary. The announcement was made during a recent meeting of the Helena City Council held on February 23, 2024. At the meeting, Natalie Steed from American Village presented a proclamation that highlighted the significance of this recognition.

During the council session, Mayor Billy Rosener and military veterans among the council members, including Andy Healy and Jeff McDaniels, supported the initiative. The proclamation emphasized Alabama’s role in the broader America 250 celebration, stating, “July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the United States of America.”

The state of Alabama has established the Alabama USA Semiquincentennial Commission to organize events and programs commemorating this historic milestone. The council encouraged Helena residents to actively engage in the celebrations, aiming to foster a deep appreciation for the country’s history.

“America 250 AL seeks to engage all Alabamians and all 67 counties in meaningful reflection, education, and celebration of the people, principles, and progress that have shaped our nation over the past 250 years,” the proclamation continued. Helena’s recognition as a Semi-Quincentennial City underlines the community’s commitment to honoring its shared history and celebrating the diverse contributions of all Americans.

City Council Actions During Meeting

In addition to the proclamation, the council addressed several other agenda items. Among the decisions made was the approval of Ordinance No. 1037-2026, which sets policies for city boards and committees. The members also passed Ordinance No. 1038-2026A, facilitating the annexation of additional property into the city.

Furthermore, Keith Martin was appointed to the Planning & Zoning Commission as a city administrative official. The council also approved a property use agreement for the upcoming 2026 Buck Creek Festival and Old Town Live events. Additionally, Dennis O’Brian was appointed to the Personnel Board.

The Helena City Council is scheduled to reconvene for its next meeting on March 9, 2024, at City Hall. The work session will begin at 17:00, followed by the council meeting at 18:00. This meeting will provide further opportunities for community engagement and discussion on city initiatives.
