Residents of Tryon and surrounding areas will come together for the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration on January 17, 2025, at 5 p.m. The event takes place at St. Luke CME Church, located at 462 Markham Road in Tryon. Organized in partnership with the Roseland Community Center, this celebration rotates annually among historic African American churches and organizations in the area.

This year, the program will showcase guest speaker Melinda P. Lowrance, a prominent civic leader and advocate from Hendersonville. The evening’s theme, “The Dream Deferred, but Not Ended,” reflects the ongoing relevance of Dr. King’s vision for justice, equality, and community empowerment.

Lowrance has dedicated decades to community service in Henderson County. In May 2024, she was appointed as a member of the Hendersonville City Council. Additionally, she serves as the president of the Henderson County NAACP, focusing her efforts on educational equity, social justice, and civic engagement. Her extensive civic involvement includes being a member of the Hendersonville Board of Adjustment since 1998 and participating as an original member of the city’s Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Committee.

The celebration aims to honor Dr. King’s legacy through reflection and inspiration, encouraging attendees to engage actively in their communities. A special performance by the Burns Sisters will enhance the evening’s festivities, followed by a light repast in the church’s fellowship hall.

The free program is made possible through a Building Community Grant from the Polk County Community Foundation, awarded to the Roseland Community Center. Community members are encouraged to attend and participate in this celebration of unity and remembrance.

In a statement, Dr. Joseph Fox emphasized the importance of such gatherings, stating they foster community spirit and reflect on the ideals Dr. King championed. As the event approaches, excitement builds within the Eastside community, eager to honour a profound legacy while reaffirming their commitment to social justice and inclusivity.
