Dick Beardsley Races Marks 30 Years with Special Guests

The annual Dick Beardsley Races returns to Detroit Lakes, celebrating its 30th anniversary on September 6, 2024. The legendary runner, Dick Beardsley, will not only participate in the event but will also host a pre-race pasta feed at the Detroit Lakes Pavilion on September 5. This year, Beardsley will be joined by fellow running icon Bill Rodgers, marking his third appearance at the event after participating in 2002 and 2013.
“It’s exciting to have Bill back for the 30th anniversary,” Beardsley stated. The two friends have maintained a close relationship, despite Rodgers residing in the Boston area. The pre-race dinner promises to be a lively affair, featuring Beardsley sharing stories from his career, and possibly even a few musical performances. “Some years I even play my guitar and sing a little,” he added.
The Dick Beardsley Races began as a local half marathon to promote tourism following the busy summer season. “Back in 1995, local business leaders approached me with the idea,” Beardsley recalled. The event has since evolved, now offering multiple race categories including a Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, and a Youth Run. Initially attracting around 100 runners, the event has grown significantly, boasting more than 1,000 participants in recent years, with a goal of reaching 3,000 participants for the milestone anniversary.
As part of the race festivities, registration and the pasta feed will begin at 18:00 on September 5. Participants can enjoy the various race options the following morning, starting with the Half Marathon at 08:00, followed by the 10K at 08:15, the Andy Beardsley 5K at 08:30, and concluding with the Youth Run at 11:00. Registration fees range from $17 for the Youth Run to $100 for the Half Marathon. Interested individuals can sign up online at dickbeardsleyraces.com or attend to cheer on the runners.
Beardsley has a personal connection to the event beyond his own participation. In 2015, he suffered a devastating loss when his son, Andy Beardsley, took his own life. The race organizers subsequently renamed the 5K event in his honor. “This will be the ninth one,” Beardsley shared, reflecting on the emotional impact. He describes running the 5K as more suitable for him these days compared to the Half Marathon.
After the races conclude on September 6, festivities will continue with live music in Detroit Lakes City Park from 10:00 to 18:00. The entertainment lineup includes American Mojo, a Tom Petty tribute band, and Minnesota alt-country star Clayton Ryan, among others. Beardsley noted that participants will receive “top quality swag” including shirts and medals.
With a rich history and community spirit, the Dick Beardsley Races not only celebrate running but also honor personal stories of triumph and loss. As the event approaches, excitement builds around what promises to be a memorable weekend for runners and spectators alike.
