Creative Vision: Decommissioned Parking Meter Becomes Jukebox
A decommissioned parking meter has found new life as a unique jukebox, thanks to the creativity of a Reddit user known as Connect_Use2528. This innovative project, shared on the Raspberry Pi subreddit, transforms an ordinary parking meter into a music-playing device using the Raspberry Pi Zero and RFID technology.
The journey began when the creator’s wife requested a simple repaint of the old parking meter, which had been collecting dust. After applying a vibrant coat of baby pink, they envisioned a more exciting purpose for the meter. Instead of merely serving as a decorative piece, the creator decided to convert it into a functional jukebox that plays music without the need for coins.
To bring their idea to fruition, the creator broke the lock on the parking meter, installed a speaker, and integrated the Raspberry Pi Zero. This setup allowed for the playback of music, but the challenge remained: how to control the device. The solution lay in repurposing the credit card payment slot, which was transformed into an RFID card reader.
The innovative system uses specially designed RFID cards to control the jukebox. Scanning these cards allows users to select playlists or skip tracks. The creator added volume control and pause/play functions as well. Despite initial difficulties fitting an encoder toggle into the housing, the project showcases significant potential for future improvements.
Additionally, a miniature OLED screen was placed on the back of the meter, where a solar panel once resided. This screen provides real-time updates on the currently playing track, enhancing user interaction.
The RFID cards were designed to resemble credit cards, making the interface intuitive. Each card features unique graphics and descriptions, such as “Butt Rock for Women,” “Butt Rock for Men,” and “Peter the Parking Meter: Baby Pink Uprising,” appealing to a variety of musical tastes.
For enthusiasts with a Raspberry Pi but without a parking meter, there are alternative projects available that demonstrate how to creatively utilize this versatile technology. The Raspberry Pi community continues to inspire innovation and repurposing of everyday items, showcasing the endless possibilities for creativity and technology.
This project not only highlights the inventive spirit of makers but also serves as a reminder of how old items can be transformed into something extraordinary.
