Boston Non-Profit Spreads Holiday Cheer with Gifts and Food
A Boston-based non-profit organization provided festive support to families in need this holiday season. On December 16, 2023, the Boston Community Pediatrics hosted its annual Holiday Shop event at the FW Webb Building in South Boston, transforming the space into a vibrant Winter Wonderland. The initiative aimed to alleviate some of the financial burdens families face during this time of year by offering free gifts, food, and various festive items.
Dr. Robyn Riseberg, the founder of Boston Community Pediatrics, emphasized the importance of the event. She noted, “Holidays are a wonderful time for most people, but if you are trying to figure out how to pay your utility bill or how to put food on the table, it’s a very stressful decision. This is to make it a stress-free, wonderful, joyous time.”
The organization serves approximately 1,700 patients, the majority of whom rely on its services for access to proper healthcare. Families enrolled with Boston Community Pediatrics were invited to participate, allowing parents to select gifts for their children, which were then wrapped on-site. Meanwhile, children had the opportunity to meet Santa Claus, adding a festive touch to the day.
In addition to gifts, families received fresh produce and gift cards to major retailers like Target. The event also featured fun items such as gingerbread houses and hot chocolate kits, ensuring a joyful experience for everyone involved. Anissa Teixeira, a parent attending the event, shared her gratitude: “I feel like it’s very helpful because sometimes life gets a little in the way, so having this is a huge help in our family.”
The Holiday Shop event supported over 400 families, benefiting around 1,000 individuals in the community. For many, the occasion represents a crucial opportunity to celebrate the holidays despite financial constraints. Eunice Placencia, who moved to Boston from Florida six years ago, expressed her appreciation for the support provided by the non-profit: “During the holiday, it can be very expensive and hard to find certain gifts, so I just feel like this helped a lot with getting gifts and putting stuff under the tree.”
Michael Melo, a long-time patient of Boston Community Pediatrics, reflected on the sense of community the organization fosters. “It’s a family. I mean, it’s an environment where people come here out of different struggles, out of different situations in their household, and they come here to look for support,” he stated.
The Holiday Shop event illustrates the impact of community-driven efforts in supporting families during the festive season. Boston Community Pediatrics continues to play a vital role in the lives of many, ensuring that joy and hope are accessible to all, regardless of financial circumstances.
